Hotel Art Collection – 5th Floor

The Art Story

The 5th floor: Stamps

Stamps are largely an afterthought in modern society thanks to electronic communications having replaced letters and postcards. But in the not-too-distant past stamps were an indispensable item in every household.

From the 1950s through the 1970s, large department of Vietnamese professional painters were tasked with producing multiple designs for each newly proposed theme. Only a few paintings were selected and the process of turning them into stamp templates ultimately destroyed the works. The paintings that were not selected, however, survived. Spanning a variety of syles and themes ranging from pure aesthetic beauty to significant historic moments to more politically-conscious aims of spotlighting elements of national pride or aspirations.
