Hotel Art Collection – 6th Floor

The Art Story

The 6th floor: Matchbox art

While lighters and electric devices have made matchbooks a relative rarity in our modern age, not so long ago, they were essential home objects with 95% of people using them for their kitchen stoves as well as for cigarettes, the lighting of ceremonial incense and other daily needs.

Despite their ubiquity at the time, out of necessity, each brand relied on skilled artists to create elaborate hand-drawn designs for the boxes. While not as overtly message-oriented as stamps or propaganda artwork, the original paintings produced by university students for classroom assignments or spending money reflect the considerations and interest of designers and consumers alike with themes ranging from agriculture to industry to simple depictions of beauty.
