The Art Story

The 8th floor: Magazines

This may represent Mia Saigon’s rarest collections.

Constituting a variety of publications from between 1934 and 1975, the magazines report on a variety of subjects including news, arts and culture and information about the colonial administration as well as stories, recipes, cartoon and even celebrity gossip from here and abroad.

Written first in French and eventually Vietnamese, they were reserved for privileged members of local society. Sold in markets and corner stores, only one issue was available per month. They proved essential in informing societal and political viewpoints and establishing cultural trends and identities while providing sources of entertainment.
